Edmunds Underwater Park

Edmonds Underwater Park is an all-levels dive site about 30 minutes north of downtown Seattle. As you can see, there is parking, but it can be limited on busy weekends or really any afternoon with nice weather. There are bathrooms and a fresh water spigot for rinsing gear. On this evening there was a hose, but I’ve been told sometimes it’s not there. At some point I assume the showers will be functional again, but until then, this system works just fine.

This is a very shallow, but decorated dive site. The only tricky part of this dive is the fact that it is a very gentle sloping bottom, so it’s easy to get turned around using natural navigation. A rope grid along the bottom helps give divers guideposts to visit points of interests. The dive park is spacious, so make sure you stay within it. There is a very active ferry port right next to this dive site and the last place you want to be when a giant ferry is moving around is near that dock. Take your initial compass readings, note where the ferry is, and make a plan for where you want to go during the dive.

SO MUCH MARINE LIFE!

It might’ve been the fact that I’ve spent all summer exploring alpine lakes, but I was stoked to see how much life is hanging around this reef. There are large lincods, nudis (Dirona albolineata), and all the usual suspects of crabs, shrimps, and rockfish. Schools of dogfish have even been spotted here. On this dive, we stuck to the left side of the reef, which has some interesting small wrecks, pipes, and tire structures.

It was great until…

Washing off my gear that night, I was so excited to be back by the ocean and around wonderful people, which of course meant I immediately got covid. Luckily, my dear friends Atina and Cedric welcomed my van into their driveway while I recovered. Unfortunately, I had to sit out the Seattle Backscatter competition and push all of my plans back for about a week and a half until I felt better and was no longer contagious.

Stay healthy out there, friends.
