I had several goals in mind for this dive.
- Explore a new dive site with my friends
- Get more experience diving with a DPV
- Test out dive lights for an Instagram reel I needed to create for Dive with Buddy
I only recently heard about the Alki Fishing Reef dive site and knew it was something I wanted to check out whenever I could get my hands on a scooter, as it is far from shore. Now that I know this spot has mooring balls, I’ll definitely be back to check it out from my boat.
Scuba diving Alki Fishing Reef in Western Seattle
Location: 47.5639376, -122.4069935
There is only street parking available, so take that into consideration when planning your carpooling. Also, as of summer 2025, there is one porta-potty available for your bathroom needs.
There are a couple of entrance points for this dive site. We chose the spot with more steps because it was easier on the ‘ol knees for the doubles divers. If I were diving alone, I probably would have chosen the side closer to the dive site, but honestly, it doesn’t actually matter because either spot will require a big scoot out into the Sound.
Task overloading while scuba diving
The combination of scooter (with which I’m not super proficient), two tanks in sidemount, camera gear, and several dive lights to test, I knew I was approaching my task loading limit. But I also knew it was a good opportunity to challenge myself in the company of solid dive buddies.
That said, I did have the wherewithal to leave my bigger camera setup at home; however, that meant I didn’t get any of the cooler macro shots of this site this time around.
Conditions at Alki
We also had the element of a moderate current. The plan had been to catch the site at slack, but setting up the DPVs took a little longer than anticipated, so when we hit the dive site, we were truly flowing with the tide. The scooters ended up being essential for simply staying on site and not blowing away into the channel.
The site consists of a few different rock pilings with metridium anemones adding their whimsy to the green water. We did see a rat fish there, but I didn’t get decent footage of it, and some cool jellies, which I love capturing with the 360 camera.
All in all, it was an interesting dive and definitely worth the visit, if you have the gear to get out there.
